Project Labyrith

Project Labyrinth is the working title of a 2D isometric Zelda-like project that I am developing in the Unity3d game engine.

The game takes place within the walls of a vast world spanning Labyrinth, filled with adventure, puzzles, fantastical locations within its walls, and interesting NPCs to interact with along the way. The protagonist Hiro [working name] awakes within these walls on the outskirts of a towering central castle with no memory of how they got there or where they came from. They must make their way through this strange place to not only figure out how they got here… but also how to get out.

The project will mix elements of traditional action adventure rpgs such as quests, level progression, and deep narrative lore for the player to dive into and combine it with “Myst-like” puzzle mechanics as well as light farming/ mining/ crafting/ town building as the player builds a new life for themselves within the labyrinth.

At this time the project focus is to build out the needed backend architecture and systems that the narrative and level designs will be placed on top of.

A critical system needed for any game project not just an action adventure is how the camera interacts with both the game world and the player.

a true 2d isometric world has a unique set of challenges and use case that I needed to work throught for this project.

Simulating a "3D" jump in a 2D environment was quite a challenge. Article about my experience coding this system is coming soon, but you can see a glimpse of the finished product on the twitter link below.

Creating a narrative system that is much more that a collection of dialogue, but instead contextual to what the player has accomplished, items they may have, or even the time of day to create a seamless narrative experince for the player. Article coming soon but you can see a glimpse into the system on my twitter. Image

What's Next?

The next milestone for this project is to create a playable alpha demo level featuring some of the basic action adventure mechanics.
